About Calvin Deon Carr

Calvin Carr (M.M.Ed) holds the position of the director of instrumental music at Mission Oak High school and boasts an impressive background in music education leadership. A distinguished figure, he has not only held the esteemed position of president at the Tulare Kings County Music Educators Association (TKMEA) but has also been elected as a state representative for the California Teacher Association, showcasing his dedication to advancing education. Calvin's influence extends to the world of drum and bugle corps, having served as a tour administrator for the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps and currently lending his expertise to the Blue Devils “B” Drum and Bugle Corps administration team. Prior to his current role, Calvin made his mark as the front ensemble captain head at Mission Oak HS for an impressive five years. He also previously served as the director of band at Pixley Middle School for a commendable nine years, underscoring his commitment to nurturing musical talent from an early stage. His pedagogical prowess is further highlighted by his tenure as the co-caption head of the WGI regional champions, Springstowne MS, and as the percussion captain head for Vallejo MS, both renowned schools hailing from Vallejo, California. Furthermore, Calvin has contributed his expertise as a front ensemble technician for the Blue Devils "C" Corps from Concord, California. Calvin's educational journey includes achieving a bachelor of arts in music education from California State University, Fresno, and a master's in arts in music education from the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. His unwavering pursuit of excellence is underscored by his upcoming pursuit of a doctoral degree in education: curriculum and instruction, slated to begin this upcoming summer. Having once been a part of the Blue Devils "B" corps front ensemble and the San Francisco Renegades in both the front ensemble and as the drum major, Calvin holds a rich legacy within the music community. His commitment is further reflected in his membership with esteemed organizations, including Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia National Music Fraternity for men, and Kappa Delta Pi, the National Honor Society for Teachers. Calvin currently resides in Visalia, California, alongside his partner Lisa, as well as his son Caden and his daughter Caitlyn. Through his multifaceted accomplishments and unwavering dedication, Calvin Carr exemplifies the pinnacle of excellence in music education and leadership.

About Jonathan Camarena

Jonathan is entering his fifth year on the Mission Oak HS music staff as the battery caption head and coordinator. He grew up in Tulare, California, and graduated from Mission Oak in 2018. He joined the instructional staff the following year. This year, Jonathan will also be assuming the role of staff coordinator and visual caption head. Along with his time spent at MOHS, Jonathan also marched snare drum with Bakersfield College under multiple world-class educators. His most recent experience includes touring with Golden Empire Drum & Bugle Corps as the lead snare technician for the 2023 season. Outside of drums, Jonathan is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in the engineering field.

About Amie Trujillo

Amie has been working with the Mission Oak High School band program for ten years. She started working right after graduating from Mission Oak in 2013 while she attended college. She works with the front ensemble and has also been working with the woodwinds. Amie graduated from Fresno State University in 2023 with a bachelor's in music education. She will be attending the Fresno State Credential program to finish off her school and begin her career in music education. She is excited to work with the Mission Oak High School band program.

Biography

About David Beason

David will be a part of the Mission Oak HS music staff for his second year, teaching battery percussion. He is also the second year's percussion caption head at Sundale School. David grew up in Tulare, California, and attended Mission Oak, graduating in 2022 and joining the music staff the next school year. All four years he has been involved with field shows and indoor percussion playing the snare drum, but he has played all the different battery instruments throughout his marching career. While participating at Mission Oak, David has attended various educational camps focused on marching percussion, being taught by some of the best educators across the U.S. During quarantine from the COVID-19 pandemic, David took private lessons from a world-class instructor on the snare drum since there were no seasons to participate in. He has also marched for Golden Empire Drum and Bugle Corps for the 2022 and 2023 seasons and Bakersfield College indoor percussion in 2023, learning from top world-class instructors. Outside of music, David is working towards his degree in education and plans on being an elementary or middle school teacher.

About TeMira Moore

Te’Mira Moore is the head color guard instructor here at Mission Oak High School. She has been actively participating in color guard for eight years, and has been teaching for three years. Te’Mira started her color guard career at Sierra Pacific High School, then moved on to Fresno State Bulldog Marching Band, Fresno State Independent, and the Mountain West All Star Marching Band. She will continue to grow her experience within the next year. She is currently pursuing a major in finance with a minor in accounting, in hopes to be an financial accountant and/or auditor in a school district. Te’Mira is excited for the continuously growing and hard working color guard of the 2023–2024 school year.

About Jasmine Rodriguez

Jasmine Rodriguez is entering her first year at Mission Oak as part of the color guard staff. She grew up in Orange Cove and graduated from Orange Cove High School in 2018. She was the color guard coach at Orange Cove for the fall season of 2018 and 2019. She moved to Fresno for school and joined the Fresno State Marching Band and Color Guard. She marched with the Bulldog Marching Band in 2021 and 2022. After the 2022 fall season, Jasmine was a part of the El Ritmo Drum and Bugle Corps for the 2023 winter season. While she was in her winter season, she was fortunate enough to march in the Rose Parade in January 2023, and she also participated in a St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland, in March of 2023. Outside of color guard, Jasmine has recently received her bachelor’s degree in art history and is now pursuing a master’s degree.

About Jazzalyn García

Jazzalyn Garcia is a part of the Mission Oak High School band staff. She is one out of three color guard coaches. Jazzalyn is also a recent Mission Oak graduate from the class of 2022. She has been doing band and color guard since she was ten years old. She grew up in Pixley, California, which is where her band/color guard journey started. She was fortunate enough to play the trombone as a part of the first winter guard team and marching band Pixley ever had. In her four years of high school, Jazzalyn won two color guard solos with the circuit SVWAA, one third place and one second place. As of right now, she is currently going to college soon to get her master's degree and become a nurse practitioner with a CNA license.

About John Max McFarland

John Max McFarland is an active composer/arranger in WGI, DCI, and BOA. He is currently the program coordinator for Legends Drum and Bugle Corps from Kalamazoo, Michigan , a position he has held since the 2016 season. From 2013 to 2015 he was the percussion composer/arranger for Pioneer Drum and Bugle Corps from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 2018 he was the percussion caption head and arranger for the Erie Thunderbirds Drum and Bugle Corps in Erie, Pennsylvania. In WGI, John has composed and arranged for many ensembles ranging from Scholastic A Class all the way up to Independent World Class. Many notable clients include Eastside Fury (2012–2014), Notre Dame Indoor Percussion Ensemble (PIA Finalists 2012, 2013), Ferndale Independent Percussion (2015 PIA Silver Medalists), Farmington United Percussion (2017 PIA Silver Medalists), and Decatur Central Indoor Percussion (2018 PSCA Gold Medalists). John also composes marching band shows for high schools and colleges all over the country. John is also heavily involved with the Cleveland Browns Drumline acting as their program director, music composer, as well as a game day performer. He began his tenure with the Browns in 2014 and continues in his current positions today. John received his degrees in Composition (B.M.) and Percussion Performance (B.M., M.M.) from Western Michigan University. He studied percussion under Judy Moonert. John has performed as the principal percussionist and principal timpanist for the University Concert and Symphonic Bands, as well as the University Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Kalamazoo Symphony and Battlecreek Symphony as a substitute percussionist. John was also a marching member of the Kiwanis Kavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps as well as the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps. John studied composition under Curtis Curtis-Smith, Dr. Richard Adams, and Dr. Robert Ricci. His compositions and arrangements have received international recognition with performances all over the United States as well as Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, and Indonesia. His most recent piece, “5 Songs in the Age of Stupidity” for two percussion and mezzo-soprano, received first prize in the Ironworks percussion duo composition contest. John is also the owner and founder of Six to Five Productions, LLC, a marching arts music publishing company where many of his original shows for marching band, winter percussion, and concert percussion can be purchased. John resides in Medina, Ohio, with his wife Sydney, his son Camden, his daughter Cadence, his two cats (Zoe and Minkah), and his two dogs (Sophia and Ozark).

About Arturo Nunez

Art is currently the audio tech for the Tulare Western HS and Mission Oak HS drum lines. He also travels and instructs as one of the cymbal technicians or the Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps and the Valley Independent Percussion. He was a longtime instructor with the Tulare Western High School percussion ensemble, which has performed competitively in the Western Band Association, Winter Guard International, Southern California Percussion Alliance, Northern California Percussion Alliance, Pep & Pageantry Arts Association of Central California, and San Joaquin Valley Colorguard & Percussion Review, and South Valley Winter Arts Association circuits. He was also the captain head for Mission Oak High School, Lemoore High School, Cherry Ave Middle School, Tulare Union High School, Golden West High School, and Exeter High School. He also worked with Sacramento State University Indoor Percussion. Art's performance career included marching in the percussion section of the West Coast Sound Drum & Bugle Corps. He also has a talent for cymbal line instruction with his trademark being sections that are visually innovative and musically precise. He is the audio designer for both marching band and Pageantry Arts. He also has a talent in equipment design, and he is established at hand crafting percussion racks and extensions for his own groups and/or for others. In addition to teaching marching percussion, Art stays busy in music by playing drumset in rock bands and as a sound equipment technician. Art's enthusiasm for music and background make him a quality educator for percussion students for all ages. He proudly endorses Vic Firth, Zildjian Cymbals, and Sticktape.
